Harry Potter Etymology | Rubeus Hagrid

RUBEUS: “Rubeus” means “red.” “Ruber” is also Latin for “red,” and can mean “ruddy.””

HAGRID: J.K. Rowling said: “Hagrid is also another old English word meaning if you were Hagrid, it’s a dialect word meaning you’d had a bad night. Hagrid’s a big drinker. He has a lot of bad nights.” Grid was a Norse giantess known for having a terrible temper. “Ha” is a variant of the Old West Norse name element “half.” So, “Ha-Grid” may just mean “Half-Grid” or more notably “Half-Giant.”

whooowee I forgot how nice it feels to draw (since I haven’t drawn in a long while) but yeah so obviously I’ve been watching Game of Thrones and I am wayyy too invested in this series but actually not sorry

I don’t think people pay enough attention to these characters. The Targaryen women went through some really harsh family life (Rhaella - Daenerys’ mother - was repeatedly and brutally raped by her husband Aerys Targaryen; Elia married Rhaegar but was abandoned by him, which leads to her being left unprotected which leads to her children being slaughtered before her eyes and then she herself is viciously raped and murdered) and Lyanna… well, died before it was her time (as did all three of them, come to think of it).

I don’t even know why I chose these particular characters to draw… I guess strong women inspire me??
